How to Program a Garage Door Opener
Most openers follow the same basic steps to pair a remote or keypad. Here's the general process — and the signs that point to a deeper problem worth a professional's eye.
The general steps to program a remote
Find the 'learn' button
On the opener's motor unit (usually near the antenna wire), locate the learn or program button. The indicator light next to it tells you the unit is ready.
Press learn, then your remote
Press and release the learn button, then within about 30 seconds press the button on your remote you want to use.
Wait for the confirmation
The opener light will blink or you'll hear a click, signaling the remote is paired. Test it from inside the garage.
Program the keypad or car button
Repeat the process for an exterior keypad or your vehicle's built-in button, following the same learn-then-enter sequence.
When programming won't fix it
If a remote still won't work after pairing, the issue may be a dead battery, misaligned safety sensors, radio interference, or a worn logic board. And if the opener runs but the door won't move, the trolley may have disconnected — or a spring or cable may have failed, leaving the door too heavy for the motor.
